Birdwatching: An Oriental Pied Hornbill’s Natural Beak Maintenance Routine

During this wildlife encounter, I observed an Oriental Pied Hornbill repeatedly rubbing its beak against a tree branch. What initially seemed like a simple grooming behavior became much more interesting when pieces of bark started peeling away and part of the branch eventually broke off. Beak-rubbing is a common behavior among hornbills and many other bird species. It helps remove dirt, food residue, loose material, and may also assist in maintaining the condition of the beak. Watching this large bird apply enough pressure to strip bark from the branch was a fascinating reminder of the strength hidden behind its impressive bill.
