Warum das größte Hotel der Welt nie öffnete [Prora Rügen]
237.5 million Reichsmarks. 4.5 kilometers of concrete. Not a single day of vacation. In 1937, architect Clemens Klotz won the Grand Prix d'Architecture in Paris for a building that was never intended to welcome a single guest. The KdF seaside resort of Rügen, better known as Prora, was the world's largest holiday resort: 20,000 vacationers at a time, in identical rooms, following an identical daily schedule. The idea came from Robert Ley, head of the German Labor Front. He called it the "holiday machine." The budget: 50 million Reichsmarks. The reality: 237.5 million. Five times that amount. Because anyone accommodating 20,000 people simultaneously on a beach needs water for 20,000, sewage for 20,000, food for 20,000—and a railway capable of handling that load. The island didn't have one. On September 1, 1939, Germany invaded Poland. The construction cranes stopped. No vacationer had ever checked in. 🏗️ In this video: • The "Vacation Machine": The Collectivization Illusion as Architectural Dogma • Clemens Klotz and the Grand Prix d'Architecture Paris 1937 • The Complexity Problem: 20,000 People and Not a Water Tap • From KdF Resort to NVA Barracks: Four Decades of Perversion • Historic Preservation and the Insoluble Problem of Repurposing ⏱️ Chapters: 0:00 — Paris 1937: The Grand Prix for an Empty Machine 1:30 — Rügen, May 1936: The Laying of the Foundation Stone 3:00 — The Collectivization Illusion: 20,000 People in Time 5:00 — The Budget Explodes: 50 to 237.5 Million 7:00 — September 1, 1939: The Construction Cranes Stop 8:30 — Wehrmacht, NVA, Reunification: What became of Prora? 10:00 — Historic Preservation and the Irresolvable Balance━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ 📚 SOURCES & REFERENCES ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ All statements in this video are based on publicly verifiable sources.
