"Today, Hoang BoL will join you in experiencing and exploring Sa Mao Pagoda (Wat Day Chxơ Khmau), established in 1873, located in Xa Mau II hamlet, Phu Loc town, Thanh Tri district, Soc Trang province." For over a century, the pagoda has maintained its role as an important cultural and spiritual center for the local Khmer people. Below is a detailed description of the landscape, architecture, and cultural life at this ancient temple: Location and Surrounding Landscape Positioning: The pagoda is located right on National Highway 1A, about 30km from the center of Soc Trang city towards Bac Lieu. From afar, the pagoda appears rustic and hidden behind rows of green trees. Grounds: The pagoda has a large land area. The space is surrounded by many ancient trees, characteristic of the Theravada Buddhist pagodas in the Mekong Delta. The tranquility and coolness here completely contrast with the noise of the traffic on the highway right in front of the pagoda. Characteristic Theravada Khmer Architecture Three-arched Gate: The first highlight that catches the eye of visitors is the three-arched gate, with its ancient and time-worn appearance. The gate architecture includes a system of small towers above, decorated with exquisite traditional cement-molded relief patterns. The Main Hall: Built along an East-West axis facing the sunrise according to Theravada Buddhist philosophy. The main hall's roof has a multi-tiered structure, with the corners curving downwards to resemble the tail of the Naga dragon – a guardian of the Buddha in Khmer beliefs. Main color scheme: The temple uses a deep yellow tone, combined with faded wall sections to create a nostalgic, simple, and unpretentious beauty. Auxiliary structures: Surrounding the main hall are a system of salas (meeting houses for monks and devotees), and stupas for the ashes of the deceased, meticulously carved with ancient Khmer patterns. Spiritual Life and Festivals: Sa Mao Pagoda is the place where all the spiritual activities and life cycle rituals of the people of Xa Mau II hamlet take place. Every year, the temple organizes major Khmer festivals such as: Chol Chnam Thmay (New Year celebration in mid-April), Sene Dolta (ancestor worship ceremony around the end of August or beginning of September in the lunar calendar), and Ok Om Bok (festival of offering flattened rice cakes and worshipping the moon on the full moon of the 10th lunar month). On these occasions, the usually quiet temple becomes incredibly lively. The temple grounds transform into a space for musical performances and traditional games...
