How Christine Camp Built a $3 Billion Real Estate Firm in Hawaii | Team Lally
Christine Camp built Avalon Group from $60,000 in savings into one of Hawaii's largest real estate development firms, with more than $3 billion invested across the islands. This week on the Team Lally Real Estate Show, she sits down with Adrienne Lally and Attilio Leonardi to talk about how she did it, what 2008 taught her, and what it actually takes to work in commercial real estate here. Christine came to Hawaii as a kid from an immigrant family. Her father died of cancer within their first year on the island, and her mom raised five children on waitressing and bartending jobs. Christine cashed out her 401(k) to start Avalon in 1999, lost half of it in the dot-com crash, and built the rest on relationships and a good story. When the 2008 crash left her $10 million in the red, she paid back every investor and every loan with 9% interest instead of walking away. That decision runs through a lot of this conversation. The show also covers Attilio's "fill your cup first" take on self-care and performance, this weekend's open houses across Oahu, an older home that sold at list price through the 10-K for Upgrades program, the Deal of the Week on a golf course community home, and Danny's mortgage tip on why first-time buyers do not need 20% down.
