WEST BANK: HEBRON: ISRAELI-PALESTINIAN CLASHES UPDATE

(19 Oct 2000) Natural Sound Facing a self-imposed deadline to end violence within 48 hours, Israelis and Palestinians sought to ease tensions on Thursday - but fresh gunfights threatened to undermine the U-S-brokered accord. In the flashpoint West Bank city of Hebron, clashes erupted after Palestinians found graffiti insulting the prophet Muhammad on walls near the Jewish enclave. Youths built makeshift barricades of barrels and tyres and then threw stones and rocks at Israeli soldiers who replied with tear gas and rubber bullets. Around four hundred Jewish settlers live in a small enclave in the Arab city surrounded by around 200,000 Palestinians.
