Avogadro's number is a fundamental component of our universe that links the microscopic world of atoms and molecules to our macroscopic world. The first time it was calculated was done so indirectly by Austrian scientist Josef Loschmidt in 1865. Direct calculations of the constant would come later in 1909, when Jean Perrin made groundbreaking gains on Brownian motion, and further in 1913 when Robert Millikan calculated the charge of the electron.
