Northern Michigan continues to be impacted by Canadian wildfire smoke

Wildfire smoke is posing a threat to everyone’s health and even summer fun. Kids are facing a higher health risk when breathing in this air. The smoke has pushed one local summer camp indoors to keep those campers safe. Summer day camp staff at the Grand Traverse Bay YMCA are taking extra precautions to protect their kids. Normally, more than 200 campers are outside, running their energy out before pickup time, On Thursday, those kids are inside following the health department's recommendations. The camp director said they're even limiting aerobics indoors, doing whatever they can to keep the kids from breathing in too much of the smoke. “Even indoors, that air quality can be tough, especially for our younger campers as they're trying to get more oxygen in,” said Thomas Graber, senior program director for the Grand Traverse Bay YMCA. “And so, whether we're indoors or outdoors, we still need to be cognizant of how they're using their bodies. Graber has been at the Y for the past 13 summers. He said even though they've dealt with wildfire smoke before, this is the first time they've moved camp completely indoors because of air quality.
