Excursion Lecture "On the Way to America - Ice Age Finds from Underwater Caves" by Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Stinnesbeck on January 31, 2018 at the Bonn Science Center The water-filled caves near Tulum on Mexico's Yucatán Peninsula are an extraordinary treasure trove for science: Due to the global rise in sea level after the Ice Age, the cave system along the Caribbean coast was flooded with seawater, thus preserving a wealth of archaeological, paleontological, and climatic information from earlier times. Research teams have already documented seven prehistoric human skeletons, dating back between 9,000 and 13,000 years, as well as late Ice Age mammals and hearths in the caves. What can these finds tell us about the history at the end of the Ice Age? Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Stinnesbeck and a German-Mexican research group are investigating the finds in the Tulum caves and will present initial findings in his lecture.
