Left behind were the ghostly remains of the settlement at Roanoke, the only sign of their fate being the hastily carved word “Croatoan”. Nearly two decades later, a second colony just inside the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay was nearly abandoned after its starving inhabitants were forced to resort to cannibalism just to stay alive. While Jamestown would survive, its early years were a desperate struggle, marked by starvation and war. These two disastrous attempts at early British settlement of the Americas are well known, but few have heard the story of Britain’s ill-fated third attempt at colonizing the mainland.
