The Great Glue Experiment! - Which Adhesives Work Best for Outdoor Glass Projects? (tested 7 kinds)

The Great Glue Experiment! Which adhesive should you use for your glass garden projects? There has been extensive online debate regarding the most effective adhesive for glass birdbaths, bird feeders, and other glass garden decor. Personally, I have always relied on E6000 glue for birdbaths. However, I recently made a switch to Clear Epoxy for my glass bird feeders and glass flowers due to its superior durability when subjected to hanging weight. I did encounter an issue with the E6000 glue once, when it began melting under the scorching Florida sun, causing my bird feeder to start falling apart. I’m uncertain whether this was due to the adhesive itself or if I had not allowed it sufficient time to dry before exposing it to the elements. Additionally, I experienced a slight separation of glassware in a birdbath while relocating it. For these reasons, I decided to conduct an experiment using various adhesives and silicones that have been recommended for these projects online. My objective is to determine which adhesives perform best when exposed to outdoor weather conditions. Living in Florida, our winters are relatively mild, but temperatures can occasionally drop below 30 degrees. On the other hand, our summers are hot, making them the ultimate test for the adhesive's ability to withstand prolonged exposure and keep the glass intact. For this experiment, I carefully selected adhesives and silicones that are both recommended and readily available in craft sizes at popular retailers such as Lowes, Walmart, and other big-box stores. The adhesives and silicones I will be utilizing are: JB Weld ClearWeld Epoxy Loctite Power Grab Construction Adhesive Clear, E6000 Clear Gorilla Clear Grip Contact Adhesive (works like E6000) Gorilla Max Strength Construction Adhesive Clear GE Advanced Silicone Clear Flex Glue Clear To simulate the average weight of my bird feeders, I will fill mason jars with sand. These jars, along with other glassware will serve as the surfaces for gluing glass to glass, allowing me to assess the endurance of the adhesives. By using a hanging weight, I aim to determine the durability of the adhesives under both weight and pressure, as well as their ability to withstand outdoor elements. Once the pieces are glued together, I will allow them to dry for a week before subjecting them to outdoor conditions. Results: • JB Weld ClearWeld Epoxy - Came apart at one contact point. Could have used more adhesive around edge to solve that problem. • Loctite Power Grab Construction Adhesive Clear - Held up very well in the heat and rain. Difficult to squeeze out of craft-size tube. Would recommend a caulk gun for this adhesive. • E6000 Clear - Melted at one contact point with the most weight. Would not recommend if using in a high-heat area. • Gorilla Clear Grip Contact Adhesive (works like E6000) Melted at two contact points. Would not recommend if using in a high-heat area. • Gorilla Max Strength Construction Adhesive Clear - Held up very well in the heat and rain. Difficult to squeeze out of craft-size tube. Would recommend a caulk gun for this adhesive. • GE Advanced Silicone Clear - Held up very well in heat and rain. Easy to use in craft size tube. Only negative is that it is a milky color, not crystal clear. • Flex Glue Clear - Held up very well in the heat and rain. Difficult to squeeze out of craft-size tube. Would recommend a caulk gun for this adhesive. #thegreatglueexperiment #adhesiveexperiment AI-generated video summary: This video discusses an adhesive experiment being conducted to determine the most effective adhesive for glass bird baths, bird feeders, and other glass garden decor. The creator of the video, living in Florida, shares their experiences with different adhesives such as E6000 glue and clear epoxy, highlighting durability concerns when exposed to outdoor elements like sunlight and heat. The experiment involves testing various adhesives and silicon recommended for outdoor projects to assess their endurance under weight and pressure. To simulate the weight of bird feeders, mason jars filled with sand are used as surfaces for gluing glass to glass. The creator demonstrates the process of gluing glass plates and candle holders on the jars using different adhesives like JB Weld epoxy, Loctite, Gorilla Glue, GE Silicone, and Flex Glue. The experiment involves allowing the adhesives to dry for a week before subjecting them to outdoor conditions to test their durability under different weather conditions. The video showcases the step-by-step process of conducting the adhesive experiment, including mixing and applying the adhesives to glass surfaces, filling mason jars with sand, and attaching hooks and other elements to simulate bird feeders. The creator provides insights into the application and consistency of each adhesive, highlighting observations and differences in their performance. #glueexperiment #adhesiveexperiment #thegreatglueexperiment
