Austin 7 Engine Noise - Car Restoration Update
Our Austin 7 developed and engine noise just before this car restoration update video from our Austin Seven rebuild videos. The rumbling engine noise could be our big ends or bearings and we will have to investigate this further. Today we have an update from our Austin 7 Rebuild and restoration. We have made a few improvements to the Austin Seven and been to a few shows and days out in her. We have upgraded the ignition system by installing a multi spark and new Champion spark plugs. The car pulls well with these upgrades and until the engine started making a noise we were making good progress in all gears. We have made a bit more progress with the pitchly sliding roof. We have used a roofing mastic to fill the gaps around the roof as it seems very similar to what was used originally. Time will tell as to whether it is waterproof in this situation. We have changed the transmission oil. The gearbox had sat unused for 40 years with a sludgy black oil in it. We got rid of this and put fresh oil in when we first fired up the Austin 7. We changed the oil as we had covered a few miles and wanted to see if any of the very old oil had been flushed out with use. We also changed the oil in the diff as that had never been changed by us and could even have been the original oil. It certainly looked old and even had water in it so we were glad to put some fresh in there. We will change it again after a few miles as that old oil could still be clinging to some surfaces. We have installed new grease nipples all over the car. We found that the front wheels had stuck on where the powder coating had added a thick layer to the surface. This caused the wheels to stick so we had to remove some coating to allow the wheel to come on and off easily. We needed access to the front wheels to make sure we had not over greased the nipples on the hubs. We developed an engine noise on our way to a classic car meeting. We thought it sounded serious and as we had only got to the end of our road we turned back. We have started to investigate the engine noise to see if it is big ends or bearings and will report back in another video. Fingers crossed the engine noise is not too expensive to fix.
