Secret Service director on current security threats

Leaders of the U.S. Secret Service described the current security environment they are facing as “highly volatile” as they prepare for a rescheduled White House Correspondents’ Dinner after it was attacked earlier this year by a gunman who rushed a security checkpoint. Law enforcement officials have warned of an unprecedented increase in threats against politicians, judges, prosecutors and other high-profile figures in recent years as political violence has become more common in the United States. The ongoing war in Iran has also heightened concerns about foreign actors targeting the president. The agency has been subject to intense scrutiny after several attempts on Trump’s life since the 2024 campaign. The most recent came at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner when a gunman allegedly rushed toward the security checkpoint with aims of harming the resident. Agents were ultimately able to stop the man who tried to storm the ballroom filled with members of Congress and five of the top six officials in the presidential line of succession, but the incident highlighted the threat environment facing the country’s leaders. “If the president goes to the same site 100 times, we will send an advance team there 100 times because things change, the environment changes, the actual footprint will change,” said Sean Curran, Secret Service director. Those changes will be put to the test on Friday, when Trump attends a rescheduled correspondents’ dinner. It will be held at a different venue, moving from the Washington Hilton to the Waldorf Historia, the former site of a Trump International Hotel that the president frequently dined at during his first term. The April shooting also renewed questions facing the agency tasked with defending the country’s most important leaders as to how the suspect was able to check into the hotel days before the event with weapons in tow and make it to the security checkpoint before being neutralized by agents. Secret Service officials said the security perimeter worked as designed and agents were prepared for the risk of confrontations at the magnetometers set up outside. Officials said physical security it only part of protecting the president, and much of the work focuses on identifying attackers before they can reach an event,. Identifying threats is a complicated task for law enforcement that is increasingly relying on detecting plots in advance and identifying potential suspects online, where they can act anonymously. Officials said at Wednesday’s press conference that threat detection has evolved over time to help identify potential suspects and act before an attack can be carried out. “The most common motive why someone carries out an attack is typically related to a grievance, and that grievance could be focused on a person, or an idea, or an ideology that becomes a fixation and negatively impacts every aspect of their life to the point where they want to take revenge,” said Nina Alathari, chief of the National Threat Assessment Center. Despite the security challenges, the Secret Service has successfully protected Trump at several large public events in recent months, including hosting one at the White House with UFC 250, without major security incidents. He was in attendance to present Spain with the World Cup trophy at MetLife Stadium in New York, attended Game 3 of the NBA Finals and went to last year’s Ryder Cup at Bethpage Black in New York. The FBI said this week it had seized more than 700 illegal drones and detected 1,600 in total in the 11 stadiums around the U.S. during the World Cup, creating constant and challenging threats for arenas packed with thousands of people.
