Zojila Tunnel achieves final breakthrough, tunneling phase completed

In a major milestone for India's infrastructure development, the excavation of the Zojila Tunnel has reached its final breakthrough, marking the completion of the tunneling phase of the ambitious project. The 13.153-km single-tube, bi-directional tunnel, located at an altitude of 11,578 feet, is set to become the world's longest and highest road tunnel of its kind. Connecting Baltal in Sonamarg, Jammu and Kashmir, with Minamarg in the Kargil region of Ladakh, the tunnel will bypass the challenging Zojila Pass and significantly improve connectivity. Construction began in April 2021 from both ends, and once operational, the tunnel will provide year-round access on the Srinagar–Leh highway, eliminating winter disruptions caused by heavy snowfall and avalanches.
