Fifty years ago, on September 12, 1974, the last emperor of Ethiopia, Haile Selassie I, was overthrown after a 44-year reign. A popular uprising against the feudal system and a series of nationwide strikes brought an end to the monarchy and allowed the army to seize power. The Derg military dictatorship succeeded the empire, lasting until 1991. But this regime was diametrically opposed to the demands of the student movement at Addis Ababa University, key players in the revolution.
