What this episode covers: Whitefield's story — the charismatic English minister whose sermons sparked the First Great Awakening in the 1730s and 1740s, who preached to tens of thousands in open fields, who crossed the Atlantic thirteen times, and who delivered his final sermon standing on a barrel outside a tavern in Newburyport, Massachusetts — holding a candle that burned to a stub as he preached.
