Hands for hours and minutes, digital display for seconds, date, and day of the week. Simple, straightforward, and extremely functional. The AQ-230 has its roots in 1982, when Casio launched the Janus, its first model combining hands and an LCD screen. The proposition was clear: to unite a more refined look with digital practicality. Decades later, the concept continues to work very well. The design is minimalist, with a thin rectangular case about 8 mm thick and weighing only 47 grams on the wrist. It practically disappears in daily use. It's comfortable, discreet, and easy to combine with casual wear or even something more formal. The dial layout is well thought out. The hands don't interfere with reading the digital display. On the LCD you have seconds, date, day of the week, alarm, stopwatch, and even Dual Time, which allows you to use the digital display as a second time zone. The case is made of resin with a chrome finish, and the crystal is acrylic. It's not a watch made for heavy use. The folded steel bracelet maintains the retro look, is lightweight and easy to adjust, but also delivers that typical feel of affordable vintage Casio models. It has no illumination or light, so in the dark you simply won't be able to see the time. It's also not designed for diving, although it can withstand splashes and everyday use. The AQ-230's greatest asset is its style and versatility. It gives a more elegant impression than its price suggests. It's compact, almost unisex, ideal for thin and medium wrists, and fits easily under a shirt sleeve – it even works as a dress watch! In addition to the classic silver version, there are models with dials in sky blue, champagne, black, and gold. There are versions with Arabic numerals, versions with leather straps, and even a special edition made for the French market in partnership with Liberty. If you want a lightweight, retro, functional, and inexpensive watch for everyday wear, the AQ-230 delivers exactly that. It doesn't impress with its materials, but it wins you over with its design.
