Spyro Reignited: The Story of Rockstar Composer Stewart Copeland
Stewart Copeland’s first big claim to fame was as the drummer in the Sting-fronted ‘80s rock band, The Police. But that’s not why you’re here, is it? You’re more interested in Spyro the Dragon. Stewart Copeland’s career is absolutely fascinating. He’s a man who’s never stayed still for very long. Every time one of his impressive creative projects comes to a close, he tries something different. It’s very inspiring. So when his time as a rock star ended, Stewart became a composer for TV and film. That led nicely to work on Spyro the Dragon, when he essentially set the bar for what music on the then brand new PlayStation era could sound like. Then, when he felt that he’d done his time on Spyro, Stewart reinvented himself again, this time as a classical composer. Still drawing inspiration from his time composing for everyone’s favourite video game dragon, but doing something very different with his ideas. Then, composing a mammoth 12 minute Spyro medley. Then, adding it into Spyro: Reignited Trilogy when ActiVision offered him the chance. One thing’s clear from all our research into Stewart Copeland’s life: the man really loves Spyro, and he has genuinely fond memories of playing the games with his kids. His work comes from a place of enthusiasm, and he genuinely loves composing music for Spyro. It’s really very sweet. In several parts of this video, we’ve used Stewart’s exact words (or an approximation thereof) as he describes his love of Spyro. Take inspiration from Stewart Copeland. Use what you love to push you to try new things. You never know what great success is waiting just around the corner!
