Ancient Roman jewelry served as both personal adornment and a vivid indicator of social status, wealth, and cultural identity. Crafted from precious metals, chiefly gold and silver, pieces ranged from delicate filigree earrings and intricately engraved rings to bold necklaces and richly decorated fibulae (brooches) used to fasten garments. Gemstones such as garnet, amethyst, and emerald were prized for their color and believed to possess protective or healing properties, while pearls—imported at great expense from the East, were the ultimate symbol of elite luxury.
