Torres Strait Urab Dancers
In the Central Torres Strait lies the coral atoll of Poruma. It is home to the renown Urab dance group; so named after the English name for the island which is Coconut. This segment documents the ongoing passion Porumalgal (Poruma Islanders) have for their culture and their efforts to ensure its survival in the wake of Westernisation. The video stresses the utmost importance of the relationship shared between elders and the younger generation on the island and that although they may be influenced by other cultures on mainland Australia, the Torres Strait Islander culture will always remain uniquely theirs.
