Title: Son Of An Archer? Was King Edward IV Illegitimate? The legitimacy of King Edward the Fourth's birth was questioned even during his lifetime. Both Richard Neville, the so-called kingmaker, and Edward’s brother George harbored doubts about whether Edward was truly the son of Richard of York. It is said that Richard the Third also voiced this suspicion in 1483 to justify his own seizure of power. Depending on how one interprets it, a reference to this doubt may be found in the 1484 law Titulus Regius. In modern times, these suspicions have resurfaced. Historian Michael K. Jones, after conducting archival research in Edward's birthplace of Rouen, claimed that Edward’s mother, Cecily Neville, and his supposed father, Richard, could not have been in the same location at the time of his conception.
