(Anchor) The construction project for the eco-friendly Ulsan Urban Railway Line 1 hydrogen tram, which is being pursued with the goal of completion by the end of 2029, is gaining momentum. Today (April 21), "priority construction," which includes ground reinforcement and the installation of temporary facilities—part of the overall project—began. As basic administrative procedures for the Ulsan Urban Railway Line 1 hydrogen tram construction project have been completed, the "Hanshin Engineering Consortium," selected as the project operator, has commenced priority construction. Priority construction refers to the practice of starting certain processes, such as ground reinforcement and the installation of temporary facilities, in advance of the overall project to shorten the construction period and ensure safety. (Interview) Ulsan Mayor Kim Du-gyeom “Construction has finally begun on Line 1 of the eco-friendly hydrogen tram, a long-cherished wish of Ulsan citizens. We will concentrate all our capabilities to build a tram that satisfies all citizens, with the goal of opening in 2029.” Ulsan City signed a contract on the 20th with the Hanshin Engineering Consortium, which was selected as the qualified bidder for the detailed design following the basic design review in February of this year. The contractor has commenced construction on the priority phase immediately after signing the contract. Ulsan Urban Railway Line 1, an eco-friendly hydrogen electric tram, will run a total of 10.85 km connecting Taehwagang Station to Sinbok Intersection, with 15 stations installed along the route. The total project cost is 381.4 billion won, and the construction period is approximately 45 months, with a target completion date of 2029. (S/U) Following the commencement of the priority construction phase, Ulsan City plans to begin full-scale construction at the end of this year once all remaining administrative procedures are completed. Ulsan City anticipates that the detailed design, various impact assessments, and final project plan approval from the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport will be finalized by this coming October. Ulsan City expects significant economic ripple effects once Urban Railway Line 1 opens, including improved accessibility to the existing city center, the resolution of regional imbalances, reduced commuting times, and the revitalization of station areas driven by increased pedestrian traffic. Meanwhile, Urban Railway Line 2, connecting Buk-Ulsan Station to Yaum Intersection along the north-south axis of Ulsan, is currently undergoing a preliminary feasibility study by the government.
