Stoke City 1961-62 Season (Stanley Matthews returns and Dennis Viollet signs for The Potters)
A look back at Stoke City's 1961-62 campaign with newspaper articles, photo's and video's from the season plus music from 1962. Falling attendances and a deterioration in both finances and form lead to manager Tony Waddington making a move to re-sign 46 year old Stanley Matthews from Blackpool for £3,000. Stan's impact was immediate as Stoke beat Huddersfield Town 3-0 and had an upturn in form as the fans came flocking back to The Victoria Ground. Add to that the amazing signing of former 'Busby Babe' Dennis Viollet for a club record fee of £23,000 from Manchester United, who, at 28 years of age, was still considered by be in the prime of his career and Stoke had cause for optimism about their future. The 5-2 FA Cup 3rd Round replay over cup holders Leicester City was a highlight of the season and almost 50,000 fans packed into the 4th Round Tie against Blackburn Rovers which is included in this season review. #stokecity #stanleymatthews #thepotters
