Stoke City 1961-62 Season (Stanley Matthews returns and Dennis Viollet signs for The Potters)

Falling attendances and a deterioration in both finances and form lead to manager Tony Waddington making a move to re-sign 46 year old Stanley Matthews from Blackpool for £3,000. Stan's impact was immediate as Stoke beat Huddersfield Town 3-0 and had an upturn in form as the fans came flocking back to The Victoria Ground. Add to that the amazing signing of former 'Busby Babe' Dennis Viollet for a club record fee of £23,000 from Manchester United, who, at 28 years of age, was still considered by be in the prime of his career and Stoke had cause for optimism about their future.
