Citing current and former US officials, a report by The New York Times stated that US officials feared Israel might eliminate Araghchi and Ghalibaf, an action that could have derailed ceasefire negotiations. According to the report, there was a risk Israel might target Ghalibaf and Araghchi—potentially as early as the time serious US-Iran talks were commencing—fearing that such a move would not only sabotage the negotiations but also reignite direct conflict on the ground. Driven by this concern, the US informed countries in the region, urging them to warn Iran that Israel could target the two officials.
