2005 Suburban 5.3L Lifter Tick: Can a $20 Engine Flush Fix It?
Trying the "Hail Mary" Fix for LS Lifter Tick | 2005 Suburban 5.3 Our 2005 Chevy Suburban has developed the classic 5.3L V8 lifter tick, specifically coming from the passenger side. Before we commit to pulling the heads and replacing the lifters—an expensive and time-consuming job—we’re trying a German-engineered engine flush to see if we can clear out the small oil passages and quiet things down. In this episode: • The Treatment: We use a high-performance engine flush, idling the engine for 20 minutes to let the detergents work through the lifters. • The Oil Change: Draining the "root beer" colored old oil and switching to a high-mileage full synthetic 5W-30. • Filter Mystery: Dealing with the mid-year change on oil filters (PF48 vs PF43). • The Results: Did it work? We do a before-and-after sound check to see if the tick disappeared or if we're heading for a top-end rebuild. Parts & Supplies Used: • Engine Flush (German Import) • 5W-30 Full Synthetic High Mileage Oil • AC Delco PF48 Oil Filter Chapters: • 00:00 – Intro: The 5.3L Lifter Tick problem • 01:30 – Adding the engine flush treatment • 03:00 – The 20-minute idle countdown • 04:30 – Diagnosing the tick (Passenger side focus) • 06:00 – Draining the oil: Seeing the gunk come out • 07:45 – Tech Tip: Dealing with mid-year oil filter changes • 09:50 – Refilling with Full Synthetic 5W-30 • 11:30 – The Final Verdict: Before & After sound check If you’ve dealt with the GM lifter tick, let us know in the comments what worked for you!
