MEJORADA DEL CAMPO, NOVEMBER 28, 2021 / Justo Gallego, the farmer who dedicated his life to building a cathedral in Mejorada del Campo, has died. He passed away early this morning after spending the last year bedridden. For 60 years, Justo Gallego worked almost single-handedly to build the famous cathedral in this Madrid town, a project that has garnered international acclaim. The Mejorada City Council has expressed its condolences and declared three days of official mourning. Justo was born in Mejorada del Campo in 1925, and his story "is marked by effort and perseverance, but above all, by faith." In fact, this is the popular name for his work, "Cathedral of Faith." It was faith that led him to begin construction on October 12, 1961, the Feast of Our Lady of the Pillar, to whom the cathedral is dedicated, fulfilling a promise he made "if he recovered from tuberculosis, which forced him to leave the monastery where he lived." Last April, the Mejorada del Campo Town Council thanked Justo Gallego for everything he has achieved with the construction of its cathedral, built primarily with recycled materials. Thanks to his work, Mejorada del Campo has gained international recognition, attracting thousands of tourists each year eager to admire this monument. Justo's remarkable story became widely known after he starred in a 2005 television commercial for the Aquarius beverage brand. The impressive cathedral of Mejorada del Campo will be finished and its future is secure. Father Ángel, president of Mensajeros de la Paz (Messengers of Peace), has reached an agreement to complete the project. "Justo has donated the cathedral to us, and now we are studying the building's sustainability with a great team," Father Ángel stated just a few weeks ago. "It is a work made by a man, and it is a divine work," he said.
