Twitter @juangangel Elaeis guineensis, commonly known as the African oil palm or oil palm, is a species of the genus Elaeis. Like all species of its genus, Elaeis, it has a tall, single trunk (stipe). The inflorescences are produced in the axils of the leaves; these are large and pinnately compound, with leaflets extending from the rachis in two regular planes. The leaflets are lanceolate. It is a perennial plant, growing to over 100 years old, but under cultivation, it is only allowed to reach 25 years, when it reaches 12 m in height. In the wild, it can reach over 40 m. The fruits are grouped in a fructescence, a drupe, covered with a waxy tissue called the exocarp, a pulp called the mesocarp, and a hard, round structure containing a kernel, called the endocarp, which protects the embryo. The fruits produced by E. guineensis are normal, although they sometimes produce white fruits characterized by not containing oil or almonds. Likewise, some almond-free fruits, called parthenocarpic fruits, are rarely produced, but are more common in E. oleifera or the hybrid oleifera × guineensis.
