Masjid al-Haram (the Grand Mosque) is the holiest mosque in Islam and the qibla toward which Muslims face in prayer. It sits in the heart of Makkah (Mecca) in western Saudi Arabia and surrounds the Holy Kaaba — first built by the Prophet Ibrahim and his son Ismail (peace be upon them). Together with Masjid an-Nabawi in Madinah, it forms the Haramain — the two holy mosques visited around the clock by millions of worshippers and pilgrims from every corner of the world. The Grand Mosque is the largest mosque in the world, accommodating more than two million worshippers at peak times during the Hajj season and the holy month of Ramadan. It also houses the Sa’i pathway between Safa and Marwa, the Station of Ibrahim (Maqam Ibrahim), and the Well of Zamzam. The Holy Kaaba is the most sacred site in Islam and the qibla toward which more than a billion Muslims face in prayer five times a day. It stands at the center of Masjid al-Haram, built by the Prophet Ibrahim and his son Ismail (peace be upon them) at the command of Allah. The Kaaba covers roughly 145 square meters and is wrapped in a black silk Kiswah embroidered with gold thread, replaced each year on the Day of Arafah. The Black Stone (Hajar al-Aswad) sits in its eastern corner, with the Yemeni Corner directly opposite.
