Genetic Origin of Indo-Europeans with Dr. Nick Patterson from Harvard University

#genetics #indoeuropean #ancienthistory #ancientdna Over half the world's population speaks a language that stems from a single ancient root. But for centuries, the exact origin of this "Proto-Indo-European" language remained one of history's greatest unsolved mysteries. Today, the bones of our ancestors are finally telling their story through ancient DNA. Welcome to a special Homo Pretelateris live stream! Host and biophysicist Andrii Repula is incredibly honored to welcome Dr. Nick Patterson, a pioneering computational geneticist from the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard. Dr. Patterson holds a PhD in Mathematics. By bringing his brilliant mathematical and statistical expertise into biology, he fundamentally transformed paleogenetics. He built the statistical architecture that allowed scientists to successfully sequence the Neanderthal and Denisovan genomes. Now, he has applied these powerful tools to mapping ancient human migrations, serving as a primary architect behind the groundbreaking 2015–2025 Nature and Science papers on Indo-European origins. In this live lecture, Dr. Patterson will break down how advanced genetic sequencing traced the ancestors of modern English, Hindi, and Ukrainian speakers directly back to the Pontic-Caspian steppes and the Dnipro-Don basin. We will explore the deep genetic roots of these ancient populations, the formation of the Serednii Stih culture, and how the Yamnaya pastoralists utilized early wagons and horses to completely redraw the demographic map of Eurasia.
