Everyone Says Buy A House. We Disagree.

There is a script most of us inherited before we were old enough to question it. Work hard. Save. Build a house. Then and only then have you truly arrived. The house was never just shelter. It was proof. Proof that you made it. Proof that your parents' sacrifices landed somewhere solid. Proof that you were, finally, someone. For decades, that script held. People organised their entire lives around it. Delayed dreams. Stayed in jobs they hated. Measured themselves against walls they were still paying for. And then Gen Z grew up. And they looked at the script; really looked at it and started asking the questions their parents never felt safe enough to ask. Who wrote this? Does it still apply? And what happens to the people who follow it faithfully and still can't afford the plot? This isn't a generation that gave up on ownership. Don't mistake their questioning for apathy. This is a generation that watched homeownership become a moving target; prices climbing faster than salaries, mortgages stretching longer than careers and decided that if the old path no longer leads where it promised, maybe the map needs redrawing. What does it mean to build wealth when the ground itself is unaffordable? What does stability look like when you can work from anywhere? What does home mean to a generation that has had to redefine almost everything? In today's #TBT we go back to a conversation we had not too long ago. A young Kenyan. Unscripted.
