Olimpo Cárdenas: Cantaba TAN TRISTE Que la Gente Se SUICIDABA 💀 | Rival de Julio Jaramillo
THE MOST POETIC DEATH IN THE HISTORY OF LATIN AMERICAN MUSIC On July 28, 1991, Olimpo Cárdenas took the stage in Tuluá, Colombia, dressed in an impeccable white suit. He began to sing "Tu Duda y la Mía" (Your Doubt and Mine), the same song that had made him famous decades earlier. He only managed to sing: "If you don't want to be with me anymore, be honest and let's break up once and for all..." and then he collapsed. A sudden heart attack killed him at 6:45 PM right there on stage. He died singing. Just as he had always dreamed. IN THIS VIDEO YOU WILL DISCOVER: Why Olimpo was orphaned at age 5 How a brutal beating by his classmates launched him to success Why his songs were blamed for causing suicides in Mexico The headline that read "OLIMPO CÁRDENAS KILLED HIM" after a suicide His relationship with Julio Jaramillo and Julio's brother (Pepe Jaramillo) Why he died singing the same song that made him famous His final moments: a white suit, a cigarette, and death on stage Why he was called "The King of Style" A LIFE OF TRAGEDY AND BEAUTY: Olimpo León Cárdenas Moreira was born in Ecuador in 1923. His mother died when he was 3. His father died when he was 5. He was orphaned and raised by his godmother. Music was his refuge, his escape from pain. In 1954, he formed the Trío Emperador with Pepe Jaramillo (brother of Julio Jaramillo) and Plutarco Uquillas. But when Discos Victoria offered him a solo contract, his bandmates felt betrayed and fired him with a brutal beating. Years later, Olimpo recalled: "It was the beating that launched me to success." That beating was, paradoxically, the beginning of his career as "The King of Style." 🎵 SONGS THAT CAUSED SUICIDES: He recorded "Lágrimas de Amor" (Tears of Love) and "Temeridad" (Recklessness) with Discos Sonolux. These songs had a massive impact in Mexico. But something chilling happened: several Mexicans committed suicide after listening to them. One newspaper headlined after a suicide: "OLIMPO CÁRDENAS KILLED HIM." Olimpo joked, "If so many people commit suicide because of me, and the law punishes it, I'd have more jail time than if I'd murdered seven bishops." His songs were intimately linked to sadness and nostalgia. He sang so deeply, so authentically, that some couldn't bear the pain. JULIO JARAMILLO'S RIVAL: Olimpo and Julio Jaramillo were considered the two greats of the Ecuadorian pasillo. In the 1970s, they recorded together in Colombia. Two legends, two immortal voices. Julio's brother, Pepe Jaramillo, was Olimpo's bandmate in Trío Emperador. Everything was connected. When Julio died in 1978, Olimpo was devastated. He had lost a friend, a rival, a musical brother. THE PERFECT DEATH: July 28, 1991, Tuluá, Colombia. Julia Scarpetta Children's Park. Livestock Fair. Public square packed with people. Olimpo had just turned 68. He dressed in an impeccable white suit. He calmly smoked a cigarette. He went up on stage accompanied by a trio. He began to sing "Tu Duda y la Mía" (Your Doubt and Mine), the same song that had made him a star as a solo artist decades earlier. "If what you tell me is true, that your love is only mine..." He continued singing with that deep voice that reached the soul. "If you don't want to be with me anymore, be honest and let's break up once and for all..." And there he stopped. A sudden heart attack. He collapsed on stage. 6:45 PM. He died singing. He died on stage. He died doing what he loved. He died singing the same song that had made him immortal. #OlimpoCárdenas #DiedSinging #KingOfStyle #JulioJaramillo #EcuadorianPasillo #Boleros #LatinMusic #YourDoubtAndMine #Ecuador #Colombia #TheOtherSideOfFame #PoeticDeath #Recklessness #TearsOfLove
