Mechanical Break Down - 284,000 mile TW E36 M3 - How deep do you go, "while you're in there"?

The next chapter of work on my E36 M3 finds me reversing the work I just did in a way, moving towards addressing everything that lingered under the skin both in the form of problems, and the wrong style of transmission for these cars...
