ICE and Railjet trains run several times a day from many German cities directly to the region. With a view from the train window, a warm croissant, and the mountains slowly drawing closer, we head towards Lake Millstatt. A shuttle picks us up and takes us right to the lake. Our home for the night is a small bivouac with its own terrace by the water. Small, cozy, and with a view of the lake. The next morning, we set off for the Alexanderhütte. It's a really hot summer day, and I'm honestly glad we chose the path through the forest. Instead of simply walking uphill on a forest road, we hike along the picturesque gorge trail. The trail leads us through dense, green forest, past rushing water, small pools, and several waterfalls. Everywhere glows in various shades of green, the stream roars below us, and the air is filled with that damp, cool gorge atmosphere. The Herzogfall waterfall is particularly impressive. Here you really feel the power of water. You can hear the waterfall from afar, spray fills the air, and after the strenuous climb, this natural refreshment is simply perfect. Nevertheless, the trail isn't without its challenges. In some places, you have to watch your step because the stones can be wet and slippery. A bit of sure-footedness is definitely a good idea. After conquering the adventurous section through the gorge, we still have a few more meters of elevation to gain. The path becomes more open, we reach a wider forest road, and can finally walk side by side, chat, and, of course, start thinking about what we'll eat at the mountain hut. Carinthian noodles are pretty high on Felix's list. I'm already thinking about the Kaiserschmarrn (shredded pancake), because many of you have told me on Instagram that you absolutely have to try it at the Alexanderhütte. Just before the hut, a real highlight awaits: a swing with a view. And what a view! Below us lies Lake Millstatt, sparkling blue in the sun, and on the horizon we can even see as far as the Julian Alps and Triglav in Slovenia. Arriving at the hut, we go inside and are immediately spoiled for choice. Everything on the menu sounds really good. The food not only looks delicious but is also beautifully presented, with little flowers and great attention to detail. Afterwards, we check out how cozy it is to spend the night up here. The hut is lovingly furnished, there's room for several people, towels are provided, and a view that makes you never want to leave. Pure hut luxury, I'd say. And as if the location of the Alexanderhütte wasn't beautiful enough, a very special treat awaits us at the end: bathtubs with a view over Lake Millstatt. Afterwards, we continue on to the Schwaigerhütte. From there, the Nockmobil takes us back down to the lake, so we don't have to hike the entire way down. And because a day at Lake Millstatt should naturally end on the water, we paddle out again at sunset.
