In the fall, many gardeners buy up green manure seeds and sow them in their plots, often simply because "everyone else is doing it." I did this several times—I too fell for the trend, hoping to get rid of wireworms. But while digging the beds, I was shocked by the number of "unfazed" wireworms among the mustard roots. The plump and nimble creatures seemed quite comfortable. Perhaps they were planning to leave the bed in a hurry, or perhaps the entire colony was commemorating the dead in the mustard thickets. But I realized for the second time that they couldn't care less about my green manure.
