Takashi Yoshimatsu - [吉松隆] - Concerto for Bassoon and Orchestra - 'Unicorn Circuit' - Op. 36 - 1988
This piece is Yoshimatsu's 36th work and the music depicts a unicorn, a mythical being, prancing through three of the four seasons. A unicorn (or 'Kirin' in many Eastern countries) is a divine animal which is said to bring about signs of good luck, equally with the Chinese mythological creatures phoenixes, dragons, tortoises, etc. It also possesses invincible aggressiveness together with peerless tenderness. The work is Yoshimatsu's second in his trilogy of pieces which revolve around mythological animals, the first beign the Concerto for Guitar and Orchestra - 'Pegasus Effect', and the third being the Concerto for 'Cello and Orchestra - 'Centaurus Unit'. The piece was premiered on the 26th December 1988 by Isamu Magome and the Kyoto Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by David Shallon.
