For many Germans, the turning point came in 2022—the energy shock following the cutoff of gas from Russia. That year, for the first time, a country that had built its power on cheap raw materials from Moscow had to face the realities of the new world. Electricity and gas prices exploded, factories began to curtail production, and some—like BASF in Ludwigshafen—moved portions of their operations to China and the US, where energy is cheaper and regulations are simpler. In just two years, the chemical and metallurgical industries in Germany shrank by over 10%. These aren't textbook numbers—these are real plants, thousands of layoffs, and cities losing their very existence. The government has tried to respond—with subsidies, incentives, and support programs. But each such move adds billions of euros to the debt. In theory, it's an investment in the future; in practice, it's putting out a fire with a bucket of gasoline. Instead of simplifying the system, Germany is creating an increasingly complex web of funds and regulations that are paralyzing the economy, not just locally but across Europe. Just look at the example from Poland's own backyard: the deposit-refund system, which, instead of being a tool for environmental protection, has become a bureaucratic nightmare for companies and shops. The European ETS system, which was intended to reduce CO₂ emissions, operates similarly, but in practice has become an additional tax on production. Germany, dependent on heavy industry, is paying the highest price. Meanwhile, the world isn't waiting. America is supporting its companies through the Inflation Reduction Act package – $370 billion in incentives and investments in green energy and technology. China, in turn, is subsidizing production on an unprecedented scale to dominate the markets for semiconductors, electric cars, and photovoltaic panels. Europe – and especially Germany – is trying to respond, but one thing is lacking: speed and flexibility. Where the US responds in a month, Brussels needs years. As China opens new factories, a debate rages in Europe over whether they violate competition laws.
