The text was published anonymously in Paris. The work is divided into two thematic parts, the first (acts one and two) referred to as a family drama, the second (acts three and four) referred to as a social drama. Both parts are connected by the character of the main character, Count Henryk, also known as the Husband. Each of the four acts is preceded by an introduction written in rhythmic prose. This provides a poetic commentary and an introduction to the action of each part of the work. Initially, Krasiński describes Count Henryk's family life. In these fragments, he reckons with Romantic poetry, clearly condemning it. According to the author, poetry (Romantic poetry) leads the creative person to selfishness. He is incapable of authentic love because Romantic poetry kills love in people (and certainly in creators), as it is too detached from reality and leads into a world of fantasy. Acts three and four are devoted to the issue of revolution: a factor that is meant to bring about the collapse of the old social order. This, as Krasiński states, is a purely destructive factor, incapable of creating anything truly new, because the hearts of the revolutionaries also lack love for society. They are people focused on their own desires. Krasiński's entire story is brought to a tragic conclusion. Henryk suffers defeat in various areas of his life—family life and his leadership of the aristocratic camp—and the revolution brings nothing new. The resulting chaos must be brought under control by a Galilean—Jesus—God.
