A victim of abuse and bullying at school, he was rejected since childhood by his parents, who treated his sexual orientation as a disease. Apurva Agnihotri is transgender, a celebrity makeup artist in the Bollywood film industry, and increasingly in demand at fashion weeks in India. At 36, she says it has never been easy to make friends, but her family's support gives her the confidence to move forward. Aref and Apurva's stories illustrate a peculiarity in India: society tends to be more tolerant of transgender people than of gays, lesbians, and bisexuals.
