1X, a robotics company invested in by OpenAI and Samsung Next (Samsung Electronics' venture investment arm), has unveiled a new robotic hand that implements precision manipulation capabilities and tactile sensations close to those of a human hand. On the 9th (local time), 1X released the technology and operation video of the robotic hand to be installed on its humanoid robot, NEO, on its website and YouTube. In the released video, NEO performed precise movements, such as assembling Lego blocks, picking up small screws, inserting a light bulb into a socket, and zipping up a jacket. It also demonstrated tactile control capabilities by detecting when an object began to slip from its hand and re-grasping it, and finely manipulating sticks and buttons while holding a gamepad with both hands. Bernd Börnig, founder and CEO of 1X, shared the video on social media and introduced it as "a hand approaching precision, strength, speed, and reliability that is similar to or surpasses that of a human." He continued by emphasizing the importance of hand technology, stating, "For the past 70 years, robotics has bypassed the problem of the hand," and adding, "The success or failure of a humanoid ultimately depends on the fingertips."
