ARDENII 1944: Marele Ambuteiaj care a Îngropat Panzer-ele lui Hitler
How could Adolf Hitler's last great offensive get bogged down on the very roads that were supposed to lead it to victory? In December 1944, the Wehrmacht launched a desperate gamble through the Ardennes forests, with the goal of breaking through the Allied front, capturing Antwerp, and turning the tide of the war in the west. What on paper looked like a repeat of the brilliant campaign of 1940 quickly turned into a battle with reality: narrow roads, destroyed bridges, insufficient fuel, unexpected resistance, and logistics incapable of supporting the advance of thousands of armored vehicles. The offensive began under the protection of fog and surprise, but from the very first hours the delays that would doom the entire operation began to appear. As the Panzer armies advanced westward, small defensive actions assumed enormous importance. A small American platoon at Lanzerath delayed the German advance for hours, the Elsenborn Ridge blocked the northern axis of the offensive, and key towns such as Saint-Vith and Bastogne became insurmountable obstacles. The elite armored columns, led by Joachim Peiper's battle group, were stuck in huge traffic jams, forced to search for captured enemy fuel to continue their advance. Every destroyed bridge, every blocked road, and every additional delay further diminished the chance of reaching the Meuse River and fulfilling Hitler's ambitious objectives. By the time the weather improved and Allied air power returned to the battlefield, the offensive had already lost momentum. Fighter-bombers attacked convoys, warehouses, and busy roads, while American and British reserves began to gradually close the German salient on both flanks. Bastogne held out, the Meuse River remained inaccessible, and the Reich's last mobile reserves were consumed in a battle that Germany could no longer afford. What was supposed to be a great counteroffensive capable of dividing the Allies turned into a huge military blockade that destroyed tanks, consumed irreplaceable fuel, and accelerated the final collapse of the German war machine.
