Ghazal is often mistaken for a musical style, but at its core it is a poetic form defined by structure, metre, and discipline. Narrated by Shabeer, General Secretary of the Kerala Ghazal Foundation (KGF), this documentary outlines what constitutes a ghazal in its technical sense and where common misunderstandings begin. In Kerala ( especially Calicut), listening traditions developed around Hindustani mehfil culture. Over time, this shared performance space led many to loosely label these traditions as “ghazal,” blurring the distinction between Hindustani music and the ghazal form. Shabeer reflects on how composers and singers like Baburaj and Umbayi came to be associated with ghazal despite their songs not following its formal structure. The narrative then turns to Shahabaz Aman, whose work marked one of the first clear engagements with the ghazal form in Malayalam. The documentary concludes at the Kerala Ghazal Foundation in Kozhikode — an organisation formed to promote ghazal in its authentic form, while remaining an open space that welcomes performances across genres.
