This is especially important for coats with a heavy undercoat, like this Shih Tzu's. Use a stiff slicker brush for faster and more efficient results. Start brushing at the paws and work in layers, holding the dog's paw and sliding the slicker brush continuously. Use a comb to detect knots and brush gently until the coat is loose. When brushing the head, be extremely careful to avoid hurting the dog. The head area is the most difficult because of the eyes, mouth, and ears. Work slowly, especially if you're a beginner.
