DIY Dropper Seat Post Tutorial

I found a way to make an inexpensive and satisfactory DIY dropper seat post until the budget allows the real deal and in this short tutorial you’ll find out how to make a diy dropper post of your own. First you’ll need to source the parts, I purchased mine at Ace Hardware on the way to the trail but most hardware stores such as lower, home depot, or true value will have these readily available. You’ll need 2 compression springs. Mine were 5/8 inch at 5 inches but every bike will be different so I suggest measure your seat tube length and diameter to be sure of precise fitting. optional are the rubber spacers I placed in either ends of the bottom spring to avoid metal on metal contact. Lastly, you’ll need a 1inch washer, or washer to fit the diameter of your seat tube. If you are worried about the springs interacting with the bottom bracket you can see here that the seat tube does not dissect the bottom bracket shell. On my bike. I haven’t encountered any problems but Doing this hack to your bike is at your own risk so I suggest investigating the area where your seat tube meets bottom bracket shell to be on the safe side. Onto the procedure. Place both the springs in the seat tube. you’ll need to remove bottle cage bolts in the vertical position to allow springs to reach the bottom of the tube. Oh and if you have some grease hanging around. You can get messy if you want. Just avoid ruining your gold watch. Add the washer to the top of the springs. This allows the Seat Post a surface to work against. That’s it. Insert the Seat Post and you are ready to drop it low. And High Get out and create Your Own Adventure! See you tomorrow!
