Nobody cares about you (sort of.)
How is it that life looks like it's so good for so many people - while also looking so bad at the same time? There's bad economic signals everywhere - and at the same time, people are eating out at restaurants, driving nice cars, and buying expensive homes while bragging about their promotions on LinkedIn. So what gives? The truth is that in our society, we value looking good over being healthy. But whenever someone's luck runs out - whenever that job gets lost, the car gets repossessed, or a home purchase turns into a foreclosure - people don't talk about their setbacks. People brag about their weddings, not their divorces. Their wins, not their losses. When people lose in a materialistic society, they just vanish - because they come to terms with what they knew all along: Nobody cares. They didn't care about anyone other than themselves. So they pay the price when things go south by understanding that nobody cares about them. But that doesn't mean life has to be lived like that. There's an alternative. And that is to practice authenticity without investing your energy in the networks of people who prioritize optics over wholeness. Be the person who doesn't look like they have anything to offer. Do what brings you joy. Spend time with people who have zero expectations, who don't try to prove anything - and don't try to manipulate or control anyone. The people who have nothing to prove and don't try to upsell themselves are also the kind of people who will probably still be there for you if you ever actually need them. It's possible to live authentically in a materalistic world. But you've got to let go of that urge to be mainstream. That feeling that you've got to jump into the rat race and look competitive. And it's sometimes eye opening and helpful to remember that LOTS of people who look like they've got everything in the bag... don't. And lots of people who look like they are surrounded by love... aren't. The one thing worse than being alone is being surrounded by people who make you feel alone. The one thing worse than not being successful is being in a room full of people who are obsessed with looking successful while the foundation of their lives slowly crumbles beneath their feet. A simple life without social or financial debt is far better than a lavish one that is lived at the mercy of people who don't care about your best interest.
