Part 5, "The Invisible City," captures the story of the Republic of Seoul and the invisible cities beneath it through the eyes of a Kyunghyang Shinmun reporter who tracked down classmates from Gangneung A Girls' High School. The reporter, a graduate of a girls' high school in Gangneung, opened her graduation album to track down her classmates. Half of her friends had left their hometown and were living in the metropolitan area. The extinction of rural regions is starting from nearby places. A general goods truck traversing a city in Gangwon Province, acting as the hands and feet of the elderly. This city, once home to 130,000 people, has now become a region at risk of extinction with only 30,000 remaining. An elementary school in Pohang received only two new students this year. Signs of extinction are being detected throughout the provinces. Pangyo has become the object of envy for young people, often referred to as "Nekaraku Baedangto." A student from a provincial university preparing for employment stated that they have no choice but to choose Seoul. The reason young people from the provinces are compelled to head to Seoul is, ultimately, to find "prey." Even Seoul, which has sucked in people, infrastructure, and jobs, has places hidden beneath its glamour. The history of Seoul's development is filled with displaced people, and young people must endure housing of woefully poor quality compared to high housing costs. In cramped, small rooms of just over 5 pyeong, young people struggling for immediate survival have no room to dream of the future. To us, with half the population flocking to Seoul, the provinces are no longer visible. Lee Kwan-hoo, a former research fellow at the Gyeongnam Institute, states, “Unless we consciously emphasize it, the provinces will remain invisible in the future.” How much do we really know about the regions? What are the methods for perceiving them? Here are people who contemplate the regions in their own unique ways.
