Today, June 10th — Portugal Day, Camões Day, and Portuguese Communities Day — we offer the world the fado that was missing. A man who lost an eye in Ceuta, almost drowned in the East to save a manuscript, lived in poverty in Lisbon with a Javanese companion who begged in the streets to feed him — and wrote the book that saved Portugal. This fado is our tribute to Luís Vaz de Camões. Our homeland is our language.
