Survivor: Wheaton's President Let a Predator Strike Again

In 2024, Wheaton College President Phil Ryken came clean about the reason the college had fired former administrator Dennis Massaro more than two decades earlier. He also claimed that new information had come to light that prompted the college to act. Ryken played the hero, championing a recent review of Massaro’s 1998 dismissal. But Massaro’s ex-wife, Kathy Gallagher, knew the truth. More than a decade earlier, she had pleaded with Ryken to tell the public the truth — that Massaro had sexually molested three students in the 1990s. But Ryken refused. And Massaro devastated more lives and a ministry in Turkey. In part two of this interview with Kathy, we hear about the cost of Wheaton’s cowardice and cover up. Not only did Massaro continue to abuse, but Kathy’s own children were traumatized and re-traumatized. What happens when a college puts institutional protection above caring for the vulnerable?
