We have a still, a buffer is placed on it, and a column is placed on top of the buffer. We pour the wash into the still, and during fractional distillation, raw alcohol is formed in the buffer. The column is no longer fed with the wash, but with concentrated raw alcohol. If we perform fractional distillation directly from the wash, without a buffer, the alcohol concentration in the still drops quickly, meaning less alcohol enters the column. The phlegm amount drops, so we need to reduce the withdrawal rate. With a buffer, the distillation process of the wash into alcohol will proceed faster, as we are extracting concentrated raw materials from it. When I saw the buffer diagram, I thought it was a great idea for those with straight-through stills. I'd install a buffer on the still, then a straight-through still, fill the tank with 40% crude alcohol, and the buffer would produce 80-90% ABV, then distill high-quality moonshine through the straight-through still. But that's not possible, since the Polish buffer is fed by phlegm, and without it, it won't work. You can't install a Polish buffer on a straight-through still; it won't work.
