You are not your code unsolicited advice from a no longer new developer

Speaker Kim van Wyk Track Education Type Regular talk (45 minutes) Abstract I've been a professional software developer (i.e. employers have paid me to write code, possibly against their better judgement) for 20 years. Like everyone else with a similar career path, I've picked up some advice for developers along the way, sometimes somewhat painfully learned. This talk will cover some of those pieces of advice, including: career growth "soft" skills working with fellow developers and employers honing development skills. Examples and illustrative anecdotes will be Python-based. This talk is hopefully of benefit to newish or junior developers but there's probably many items in here that will resonate with experienced developers as well. ========================== Sponsors of PyCon Africa 2025 ========================== Platinum sponsor: Valkey: https://valkey.io/ Regional Diamond: Thinkst Canary: https://thinkst.com/ Amazon Web Services (AWS): https://aws.amazon.com/developer/ Gold Sponsors: Apify: https://apify.com/ Canonical: https://www.canonical.com/ Regional Gold: NICIS: https://www.nicis.ac.za/ Silver Sponsor: Google: https://google.com/ Regional Silver: Cyber Mint: https://www.cyber-mint.com/ Bronze Sponsor: Caktus Group: https://www.caktusgroup.com/ Regional Bronze: Prelude.Tech: https://prelude.tech/ Afrolabs: https://afrolabs.co.za/ CoderLevelUp: https://coderlevelup.org/ Contributing Sponsors: Lincoln Loop: https://lincolnloop.com/ Django Software Foundation: https://www.djangoproject.com/foundat...
