▶ Korea, the world's only divided nation, and the Northern Limit Line (NLL), a boundary of ceaseless conflict. Centered on Baengnyeongdo, the northernmost island in the West Sea, this is the story of the people guarding the NLL and the seals, Jangsan Cape hawks, and black-tailed gulls that freely cross the border. It sheds light on the pain of the times conveyed by the waves and the eternity of nature. 1. Seals Freely Crossing the NLL Located at the northernmost point of the West Sea, Baengnyeongdo is known as the habitat of the spotted seal, the mascot of the Incheon Asian Games. Seals, an internationally rare species that inhabits only the Arctic Circle north of 45 degrees North latitude, are marine mammals that give birth to their young exclusively on the ice. However, uniquely, seals live on a rocky island off Baengnyeongdo, south of 38 degrees North latitude. Volume 3 of *Jasaneobo*, the first book on marine life in Korea, introduces a marine mammal called the *Okboksu*, which is none other than the spotted seal. It is said that the entire West Sea was once a collective habitat for seals, but currently, their population has drastically declined, putting them at risk of extinction. Spotted seals resting peacefully gathered on rocks right in front of the naval fleet guarding the NLL... Approximately 300 spotted seals from Baengnyeongdo migrate to the Shandong Peninsula in China during the winter for breeding, and return to Baengnyeongdo by crossing the Military Demarcation Line in the spring. 2. The Jangsan Cape Peregrine Falcon That Crossed the Boundary of Division Jangsan Cape is located within 15km of Baengnyeongdo, and the Northern Limit Line (NLL) lies between the two islands. In early spring, when the winter chill still lingers, the Peregrine Falcon (Natural Monument No. 323) builds a nest and lays eggs at the Nampori Fold Structure in Baengnyeongdo (Natural Monument No. 507). The mother hawk, who hunts prey without rest to feed her chicks, mercilessly drives the young out of the nest when the time comes for them to become independent. We reveal the entire process of raising chicks of the Cape Jangsan hawk, which crossed the boundary of division to breed on Baengnyeong Island. 3. People Guarding the NLL Baengnyeong Island, the northernmost island in the West Sea, is the island closest to North Korea. On this remote island, which is closer to Pyongyang than to Seoul, live fishermen and residents who fish amidst tension along the waterways of the Northern Limit Line (NLL). Fishermen engaged in trap fishing in the narrow waters next to the NLL perform dangerous and arduous work amidst the tense relations between the North and South. On March 31, 2014, sirens and evacuation announcements echoed through the town of Jinchon... Over 500 rounds of artillery provocations continued for three hours, with about 100 landing near Seal Rock south of the NLL. We capture the anxious daily lives of residents living in this militarily tense zone. While animals such as seals, hawks, and seagulls freely cross the NLL, those who have left their homes cannot return to the land visible right before their eyes and can only gaze at it from afar through binoculars.
