Modern Executioners Speak: The Job No One Wants to Talk About

Capital punishment does not end with the condemned. In countries where the death penalty still exists, someone has to carry out the sentence. But what happens to those people once the execution is over. In this video, we explore the hidden lives of modern executioners from around the world, using rare interviews and firsthand accounts from Saudi Arabia, Egypt, India and the United States. These are the people tasked with killing on behalf of the state, and their experiences could not be more different. We examine how some executioners frame their work through religion, duty, or emotional detachment, while others are haunted by long term psychological trauma, including post traumatic stress disorder, depression, addiction and moral injury. From public beheadings in Saudi Arabia, to hangings in India, to lethal injection and the electric chair in the United States, this video looks at how culture, faith, law and secrecy shape the executioners experience. You will hear about hereditary executioner families, executioners who are treated as respected figures in their communities, and others who live in isolation and shame.
